WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS?
Coronaviruses are a broad family of viruses that can cause disease in humans or animals. Some coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections in humans ranging from the common cold to more serious conditions such as middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The latest discovered coronavirus causes a disease called COVID-19.
WHAT is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the last discovered virus in the coronavirus family. Prior to the outbreak in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, the new virus and the disease it causes were not known. Today, the COVID-19 outbreak has turned into a pandemic that has spread to many countries around the world.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19?
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, dry cough, and fatigue. More rare symptoms include joint and muscle pain, nasal congestion, headache, conjunctivitis, sore throat, diarrhea, loss of taste or smell, rash, and discoloration of the fingers and toes. As a rule, these symptoms develop gradually and are weakly expressed. In some infected individuals, the disease is accompanied by very mild symptoms.
Most patients (about 80%) recover spontaneously without the need for hospitalization. In about one in five cases, COVID-19 is severe with the development of respiratory failure. Older people, as well as people with comorbidities such as hypertension, heart or lung disease, diabetes, or cancer, are more likely to have a severe course of the disease. However, everyone can get infected with COVID-19 and get seriously ill. People of all ages should seek immediate medical attention if they have an elevated body temperature and/or cough that is accompanied by difficulty breathing/shortness of breath, chest pain/congestion, speech or movement disorders. If possible, it is recommended to call a doctor by phone or call the hospital beforehand, which will allow you to refer the patient to a specialized medical institution.
